DIY Foam Stamps

Have you ever wondered how to make your own foam stamps? Are you looking for a way to liven up your nursery, kids bedroom, or any room in your home? Homemade foam stamps are simple and inexpensive solution for dressing up your walls. In this example, I made a ric-rac stamp. There are so many other possibilities; create stars, flowers, a chevron stripe or anything you can imagine.

First, you will need to get a sheet of foam from your craft store. I folded mine in half because I wanted to create symmetrical shape.

Next, I used a pencil to draw the shape I wanted. (Use a pencil first so you can erase until you get just the shape you want.) Then trace your shape with a marker.

With your foam still folded, carefully cut your shape.

Use some of your extra foam to create little "handles" for your foam stamp. Tape on these handles. This will make stamping easier.

Use a small paint brush or foam brush to cover the front side of the stamp with acrylic paint.

Gently press your stamp against the wall.

Repaint your stamp and continue the pattern on your wall. A laser level will be helpful if you are creating a pattern all the way across the wall.

If you are using the stamp on a textured wall, you will need to go back in with a small brush and touch up the paint when you are done.

We love the results what do you think? Give this technique a try and share pictures of your results with us on Facebook!

This color choice does not come as a surprise as  lately we are seeing shades of purple popping up everywhere in interior design. According to Pantone, this lovely color is perfectly paired with olive or hunter greens and also shades of turquoise, one of our customer's favorite colors for 2013. We think it will work beautifully paired with gray, also one of the hottest colors in modern design.

Ideas for a Boy's Pirate Bedroom or Nursery

Ahoy Matey! Are you searching for a unique theme for a boy's bedroom or nursery? Have you considered pirates? Little boys are always looking for a bit of adventure, so a pirate themed room will certainly stir his imagination.

 Pirate Bedding for Boys

We love this unique and adorable look created by designer Sweet Jojo Designs. Sometimes great ideas for boys rooms are hard to come by, but this style is such a fun idea. This bedding and accessories capture the spirit of adventure on the high seas in a way that is fun and not scary.

Here are some great ideas for your pirate room:
  • Hang a ship wheel on the wall. Here is a fun and inexpensive Pirate Ship Captain's Wheel  you can buy on Amazon.

  • Use heavy rope to accent your room. You could write your child's name on the wall with rope. If you want the real thing, check out Rope Warehouse where you can buy real nautical rope! Be careful if you use rope in a baby or toddlers room. Put it high and out of reach so your child does not have a chance to be tangled up in the rope.

  • If you want to go all out, make a pirate ship bed! Check out this Pirate Ship Bed. What boy wouldn't love this?

  • Paint a pirate treasure map on the wall.

  • Store toys in a Pirate Treasure Chest.
We hope these ideas will get you sailing on to the pirate room of your little guys dreams. Have you created an amazing pirate themed room for your guy? Head on over to our Facebook page and share your photos with us. We may even feature your room on our blog!

Baby Burp Cloth Cupcake Tutorial

Last week a new niece entered my world and her arrival got me into a sewing mood. I wanted to make something extra special for her and this adorable handmade burp cloth baby cupcake gift set was the result. If you are looking for a unique baby gift for Christmas or a baby shower, you can make this adorable gift yourself. The best part is that with a couple of coupons for my local craft store this gift cost me under $12. Who can beat that? This simple tutorial will teach you how to make a burp cloth and how to wrap them up in cupcake packaging.

First you will need to gather all of your supplies. For this project you will need:

  - 1/3 yard of two different printed fabrics (off a 45 inch bolt)
  - 1/3 yard of minky dot fabric (off a 60 in bolt)
  - Cupcake box (from the cake decorating section of your craft store)
  - Decorative ribbon
  - Matching thread
  - Jumbo cupcake cups

baby burp cloth tutorial 2
The next step is to cut your fabric.

Cut two pieces of each printed fabric to the size of 11" x 13". Cut four pieces of your minky dot fabric also to the size of 11" x 13".

Now you should have a total of eight pieces of cut fabric.

baby burp cloth tutorial 3
With right sides together, pin each piece of printed fabric to a piece of minky dot fabric.

Sew around each burp cloth with a 1/2" seam. Leave an opening on one side of about 1 1/2" so that you can turn the burp cloth right side out.

Once you have sewn the cloths, trim the corners and turn each one right side out through the opening.

To poke out the corners, you can gently use the point of a pencil on the inside to push it out. (One of my favorite tips from my 4-H days.)

baby burp cloth tutorial 4
Press each burp cloth with your iron on a medium setting to make sure all of your seams are neatly aligned.

Neatly tuck in the edges and pin the opening you used to turn your burp cloth right side out.

Top stitch around all four edges of the burp cloth. This will give you a nice finished look and seal up the opening.

baby burp cloth tutorial 5
Now, you should have four gorgeous 10" x 12" burp cloths.

It's time to wrap them beautifully!

Fold each burp cloth up three times to get them into a shape that is perfect to roll up.

baby burp cloth tutorial 7
Roll up each folded burp cloth and tie it up with a piece of thread or rubber band.

baby burp cloth tutorial 8
Place your burp cloth in a cupcake cup and tie off with some adorable ribbon.

Tip: If you don't have a helper when you are tying your bow, it is easier to tie the bow around the burp cloth first and slip it off. Then put the burp cloth in the cup and slide the ribbon up over the bottom of the cup.

Finally, tuck your adorable burp cloth cupcakes into a cupcake bakery box and tie off with a ribbon.

What a beautiful baby gift! Baked with a little bit of love and totally unique!

If you don't have the time to make your own burp cloths, you can check out the adorable Limited Edition Bibs and Burps in our shop that would work beautifully for this project. Check them out and take 10% off through December 31, 2013 with the coupon code LIMITED-EDITION.

Baby Girl's Chevron Nursery - Mixing Patterns in Your Nursery

We are so excited to announce that Sweet Dreams My Child will now be carrying products from Caden Lane! We love the way Caden Lane's designer Katy Mimari has a way of putting together coordinating prints in her styles that are eclectic and unique. Take a look at this adorable nursery she designed for her third baby, Lila. This unique nursery successfully combines the oh so popular chevron print with polka dots and mod prints for an unforgettable style.

Baby Girl Chevron Nursery

Tips for Mixing Colors and Patterns in Your Nursery

Do you want to create a look of your own that is as stunning and unique as Katy's nursery? Here are a few tips to get you started.
  1. Find an Inspiration Piece -  Every design has to start somewhere. The perfect launching pad for your color palate is an inspiration item. This can be found anywhere. You may find a bedding set, fabric swatch, pillow or piece of art work that inspires you. Use this inspiration piece to come up with your color palate and general style. For this nursery the Lila Chevron Baby Bedding Set was the inspiration. The bedding provided the colors for the nursery and the chevron pattern design.

  2. Choose Patterns of Different Scale - Now that you have a color scheme to work with, assemble patterns of different scale and weight. Combine large scale patterns (such as the large scale chevron wall and large polka dot rug) with patterns of a smaller scale (such as the chevron and mod prints in the crib bedding).

  3. Add Some Solids - Choose one or two colors from you palate to use in solids and sprinkle your solids around the room. Notice the bright solid pinks used on the crib bedding, curtain trim, frames and stuffed animals spread throughout the room.

  4. Don't Forget Texture - One great way to bring life to a nursery is with texture. In the nursery above notice the soft area rug and the rosette trim on the curtain panels.

  5. Have Fun - Make your own rules! A nursery or kids bedroom is one place in your home where you can let your creative juices flow. So mix and match away and don't forget to share photos of your lovely room with us on Facebook. We'd love to see what you come up with!

If you are in love with the Lila Girls Chevron Crib Bedding Set used in this nursery be sure to check it out in our shop!

Thrift Store Chair to Chevron Desk Chair Makeover

We recently remade my daughters room. It was out with the princesses and in with a fun and trendy look for my tween. As part of the room, redo we added a new desk for her to work on projects and homework. We though it would be fun to remake a thrift store chair for her desk and are pleased with this fun one-of-a kind desk chair that we created together.

DIY Chevron Chair Makeover

Here's how we did it! I'm going to be honest, some sewing experience will be helpful for this project. I got the idea to remake a chair several years ago when watching a home decorating show on TV where they were making a slip cover for an old chair or couch. The basic concept is to turn your fabric pieces inside out and pin them while on the chair for a fitted look.

Here are the steps to remake a chair:

First you may need to restructure the shape of the chair a bit. Take apart the seat, removing the old dirty fabric and padding. Then add some cushioning of your own. I bought a simple queen size quilt batting from my local craft store (with my 40% off coupon of course!) and went to work.

Cut a square shape and staple the batting to the chair seat with a staple gun. Be careful with this part if your children are helping! Leave one side open and add a bit more pillow stuffing to make the seat more cushy.
Next staple off the forth side and trim off all of the excess batting. Now you have a clean and soft seat for your chair!
Now you can reshape the chair back a bit. Using the same queen size quilt batting, we wrapped and stapled providing extra padding and shape for the chair. This part doesn't have to be pretty. Your lovely slip cover will hide your work!

Reattach your seat and the chair is ready for it's new look!
Now for the slip cover. My daughter picked a fun chevron print for her chair. For our chair, we bought five yards of fabric and had some left over.

Cut two pieces of fabric, one for the seat and one for the back. You may need two pieces of fabric for the back if your pattern doesn't look the same upside down.

With your fabric inside out, pin your fabric in two places. Where the seat meets the back and where the fabric meets on each side of the seat back.

Here is a close up of the pinning around the seat back. Now you can remove the fabric from the chair and sew three seams. One connecting the seat bottom to the back and two seams down the sides of the seat back. Sew right along the pins.

Now that your seams are sewn. Put your slip cover back on your chair right side out.

It is now time to construct the skirt! Cut three pieces of fabric. One front panel and two side panels. Measure your chair carefully allowing enough fabric for all of the seams. Don't forget to match up your pattern at the seams if it needs matching. Also allow enough fabric to attach your skirt to the seat and back and for a hem at the bottom.

Sew two seams to connect your front skirt panel to each of the side panels.

Here is a picture of the skirt panels sew together.

The next step is to attach the skirt.

With your slip cover (seat and back) on your chair right side out, pin your skirt (also right side out) to the seat on the front and sides. You will attach the skirt to the back panel in the next step. Tuck the fabric on the corners for a tailored look.
Here is what the chair should look like with everything pinned.

Now you will carefully remove your slip cover and sew the skirt to the seat on the front and sides. You will be sewing on top of the skirt with the right side out.

This is how your seam will look when it has been sewn.

Now that your skirt is attached, put your slip cover back on your chair, this time inside out.

To finish the skirt, pin the skirt panels to the back panel of the chair on both sides.

Remove the slip cover and sew up these two seams right along the pins. This seam should match up to close the corners where they meet the back of the chair.

When you have finished these seams, try your slip cover right side out on your chair to make sure you are happy with the fit. If everything looks good, trim off excess fabric at the seams.

Put your slip cover back on the chair right side out.

The final step is to pin the hem on the skirt. Pin all of the way around on all four sides of the chair.

Remove the slip cover and sew your hem.

Chevron Desk Chair Makeover
Now it's time for the fun part!

Put your slip cover on your chair and enjoy!

My daughter and I are pretty happy with the results. What do you think?

New! Elizabeth Pink and Gray Bedding for Girls

Creating a beautiful room for your girl is just a step away with a new beautiful Elizabeth bedding set. One of the most popular colors in home design this year is the color gray. It is a soothing neutral color that can easily be combined with other colors to create a look that is peaceful and modern. The Elizabeth line by designer Sweet Jojo Designs combines gray and white damask with pink and white in lovely bedding sets for the crib, toddler, twin and full or queen sized beds.

Pink and Gray Girls Bedding

Here are a few tips for using gray in decorating your home:
  • Many consider gray to be a formal color. It is a perfect choice to use with a traditional pattern like damask as seen in this Elizabeth collection. Gray is also perfect for a traditional Victorian themed bedroom or nursery.
  • Although gray is often seen as formal, there isn't a color that could be more trendy. Use gray in a bold chevron, ikat or diamond pattern for a thoroughly modern look.
  • Combine gray with other colors to warm up a room. Gray looks fabulous when combined with colors like pink, turquoise, coral or purple, just to name a few.
  • Use multiple shades of gray to add depth to a room.
Can't get enough of gray in home design? Here are a few more looks that we love!
